Scheune und Speicher in den 1950er Jahren

The corn-loft is evidently the eldest building in Emsdetten. A great fire destroyed a large part of the village of Emsdetten in 1688. Dendrochronological examinations of the used timber proved that the corn-loft was erected in 1689, in the – at that time usual – half-timbered way, to replace the former buildings which had been destroyed during the fire. At that time it was customary to use the freshly cut trees in the same year.

During the more than 300 years since the erection of the building, it has not been changed. In 1956, the municipality of Emsdetten purchased the complete farm. In addition to the August-Holländer-Museum and the Wannenmacher-Museum, the corn-loft became an important part of the „Museum Island“. The last renovation dates back to 1988, when the town celebrated 50 year freedom of the city.
